Competition center and parking

As has already been made clear, the competition center is located at and around the Saimaanportti comprehensive school. The address is Rinnekatu 8, 50100 Mikkeli

One important note when moving around inside the school. The school's interior is a so-called clean room, and you are not allowed to walk around inside with shoes on. Shoes must be left inside the front door in the entryway.

Available facilities

The school facilities themselves are divided into two parts:

From the yard, the left-side door leads to the ground-floor changing rooms, which contain showers and toilets.

You go upstairs via the stairs, where the competition information and the cafeteria are located.

Competition information and the canteen are located upstairs.

In addition, locker room facilities for the artificial ice and artificial turf fields are available in the yard. Showers and restrooms can also be found here.

Next to the school, on the shore of Urpolanlampi lake, there is a swimming beach where you can take a dip after the competition. So, it's worth bringing your swimsuit.

The competition information located upstairs is open on Friday from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM and on Saturday from 6:00 AM onwards.

Food is available in the upstairs dining room from 12:00 PM.

Exchange area

The maintenance and substitution area for the teams will be Urpola artificial turf field. Nothing with spikes is allowed on the field, as heating pipes run underneath the artificial turf.

From the field, teams can grab a spot they like for their belongings.

During the competition, access to the field is always from the southwest corner, and departure from the field is from the southeast corner.

Water will be available near the exit during the competition.

When leaving the maintenance area, please organize your belongings neatly and place smaller items in boxes or similar containers if possible, so they don't break or get lost as people move around them.

Unloading and parking

Goods can be unloaded from cars in the parking areas at both ends of the artificial turf field, but actual parking takes place on the other side of Highway 5 in the so-called. On the barrack field. Parking here is free. Access to the field is via Ratsurinkuja and Prikaatinkatu.

As an exception to other series, the Extreme series can park their cars in the parking lot of Saimaanportti School, to the west of the school.

Parking is on Kasarmin kenttä, north of Route 5.

Additional information and schedules can be found in a previously published document. Competitor Info - Article.

Event information and rules

The Saimaa Challenge is a multisport adventure event.

In the event, two-person teams navigate from one checkpoint to another by running, (mountain) biking, and paddling in the order specified in the route book. The maps are distributed to the participants two hours before the mass start, after which the participants plan their own routes. The checkpoints feature the familiar orange-and-white checkered flag used in orienteering. Some checkpoints include tasks (quests) where participants must follow separate instructions. In longer series, these quest tasks test participants’ knowledge and skills in the sport; in shorter series, they provide memorable experiences.

The event’s Explore The series (lasting about 3 to 6 hours) is designed for those new to the sport as an accessible option that can be completed with a regular bike and basic navigation skills.

The Adventure The series (5–10 hours) offers a slightly greater challenge, but can be completed successfully even without prior experience in adventure races. The course has been made even easier for 2024.

The Challenge series (7–12 hours) is still slightly higher in terms of difficulty. In the Challenge series, the planning will be more challenging and the terrain will be more diverse.

The Extreme The series (15 to 22 hours) challenges participants both mentally and physically due to its length and physical demands. In terms of athletic skills, the demands are significantly higher than in other series. There are very few individual challenges.

The event takes time for all participants, and the best from all series are rewarded. In the Explore and Adventure series, winners receive a commemorative prize, but the actual prizes are drawn among the finishers. In the Extreme and Challenge series, prizes are awarded based on results to the top performers.
