Sump insurance

As the competition organizer, we want to provide the most enjoyable and comfortable event possible for the participants.

As part of our feel-good campaign, we offer all participants the opportunity to purchase Fire insurance.

With fallback insurance, you can nullify an error that occurred on a single control point before it happens with a pre-purchased insurance.

As an April opening offer one (1) checkpoint insurance for €10.

Read the detailed insurance statement below and order Pump Insurance now at a discounted price for next summer's competition.

INSURANCE STATEMENT: Pump Protection™

Contract ID: IN THE FOREST OF AINA-2026

Object of insurance: Adventure sports competition results and competitor's peace of mind.

1. Purpose of Insurance

Pummiturva™ is designed for the modern adventurer whose navigation skills and reality don't always align. The insurance provides security in situations where an individual ”blackout,” a misread map, or getting completely lost threatens to ruin an otherwise brilliant competition performance.

Insurance enables one (1) stage elimination of the impact of a human error, or a ”blunder,” that occurred during that time on the results.

2. Reimbursable Damage (What is ”Pummi”?)

An incident is considered to have occurred when a competitor or team spends significantly more time in a checkpoint interval than their general performance level at other checkpoints would suggest.

  • The insurance covers: Navigation errors, getting lost, and unnecessary bushwhacking.

  • Insurance does NOT cover: Physical cooling (drip-feeding), coffee breaks, or admiring scenery, unless they can be proven to be a direct consequence of getting lost.

3. Compensation Calculation Formula

Pummiturva™ uses mathematical Fairness coefficient (FC), by which the insured time interval is adjusted to match the competitor's actual performance.

PhaseAction
1. Level DeterminationCalculate the competitor's average speed relative to the leader's speed for all successful at rest stops.
2. ComparisonLet's compare this ratio to the peak time in the interval where the error occurred.
3. CorrectionFor the rest interval, change it to the time that corresponds to the competitor's average level in that interval.
4. OutcomeExtra ”penalty time” will be wiped from the official results list.

Example: If you usually move at a pace of 120 %, but at one point fall behind by 400 %, Pummiturva™ will adjust the time back to the 120 % level.

4. Insurance Terms and Limitations

  • One-time Insurance can only be redeemed once per competition. Choose your checkpoints wisely.

  • Mandatory arrival registration The insurance is only valid if the competitor reaches the finish line. The insurance does not cover those who drop out.

  • Burden of proof The competitor must be able to demonstrate, through GPS tracking or a sincere account, that it was an honest mistake and not, for example, an unauthorized shortcut or a lunch break at a local service station.

5. Claiming Reimbursement

The incident report must be submitted immediately after landing to the results service before the ”explanations already started en route” phase ends. The insurance company reserves the right to good-naturedly laugh at the route drawing before approving compensation.

Pummiturva™ – Because everyone deserves a result they can brag about at home.

Event information and rules

The Saimaa Challenge is a multisport adventure event.

In the event, two-person teams navigate from one checkpoint to another by running, (mountain) biking, and paddling in the order specified in the route book. The maps are distributed to the participants two hours before the mass start, after which the participants plan their own routes. The checkpoints feature the familiar orange-and-white checkered flag used in orienteering. Some checkpoints include tasks (quests) where participants must follow separate instructions. In longer series, these quest tasks test participants’ knowledge and skills in the sport; in shorter series, they provide memorable experiences.

The event’s Explore The series (lasting about 3 to 6 hours) is designed for those new to the sport as an accessible option that can be completed with a regular bike and basic navigation skills.

The Adventure The series (5–10 hours) offers a slightly greater challenge, but can be completed successfully even without prior experience in adventure races. The course has been made even easier for 2024.

The Challenge series (7–12 hours) is still slightly higher in terms of difficulty. In the Challenge series, the planning will be more challenging and the terrain will be more diverse.

The Extreme The series (15 to 22 hours) challenges participants both mentally and physically due to its length and physical demands. In terms of athletic skills, the demands are significantly higher than in other series. There are very few individual challenges.

The event takes time for all participants, and the best from all series are rewarded. In the Explore and Adventure series, winners receive a commemorative prize, but the actual prizes are drawn among the finishers. In the Extreme and Challenge series, prizes are awarded based on results to the top performers.
